Apps for Friends
Since one of the focuses of this site is Brotherhood, I occasionally mix in some iPhone apps that help you meet new people or stay connected to friends.
Apps to Meet and Stay Connected With People
The ones below aren’t for the technologically faint at heart or for anyone who is trying to reduce an addiction to their iPhone. All of them allow you to use voice-technology to talk to friends on various networks and sometimes through VoIP, which means if someone wants to Goolge Talk with you, for example, you could pick up the call at the grocery store.
- Palringo: For you James Bonds’ types, Palringo can be used walkie-talkie style. You can also use it to talk via AIM, Gadu Gadu, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN and Yahoo. It also has a convenient feature (that could be useful to high or low-tech types) that lets you update your status message across all your messaging services from within Palringo too.
- NimBuzz: 17 million users are giving this one a spin, partially because it sends push notifications to your screen any time someone tries to contact you…virtually any way a person could try to talk to you. You can then answer calls from friends via Facebook, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, MSN, MY Space, Skype and Yahoo. Or if you have Wifi, you can also chat via VoIP.
- QQ: This one lets you chat over many different networks, just like the two above with a possible bonus (or headache) being that you can hold multiple conversations at once. Overwhelmed anyone? QQ also lets you post an “offline message” for all of the networks at once and, and–randomly–to switch skins by shaking the phone.
- TruPhone: TruPhone has many features similar to the apps above. It can let you use VoIP on MSN, Skype and Truphone. One unique bonus is that it also works on second generation iPod Touches.
- Papaya Game Edition: This is a one-stop, all-in-one app for talking across VoIP, AIM, GTalk, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo. And, cheers to wasting time, you can play games against them while you talk. You knew life would eventually meet your online gaming needs, right?
