I Can Hear My Spirit Click

A slightly soggy Sarah on U of M's campus after an afternoon of flyering in the rain.

The building across the street from the Michigan Theater that houses the infamous suite 22--the home of the AAFF.

The office where the magic happens!

The Ann Arbor film festival.

I remember the first time I heard the phrase. It sounded exotic to my college freshman years. A little bit indie, a little bit Hollywood.

Too many friends and I piled into a car, sitting on top of each other, and roadtripped to Ann Arbor (about 30 miles – give or take) to catch a few screenings.

The movies were quirky, eccentric…traits I always liked a lot more than “glamorous” or “commercial”.

They weren’t as “obvious” as the mainstream titles hitting it big at Jackson 10–then called Jackson 8.

These films forced your mind to wake up; to wonder about the director’s motivation. What were they trying to say? And why did they say it that way?

Sitting there that first time, I could almost hear something in my spirit audibly click.

And even back then, I think I knew, that when something snags in your spirit… when a project rings inside you, stirs up more of the same stuff already moving around in your soul, it’s a good rule of thumb to move toward it.

Experiences can sometimes fit with our wiring and dreams. And when they do, they help us absorb bits of skill and ambiance that call us forward to future projects. They are pieces of inspiration that sends us spiraling toward what we’re meant to do.

What about you? What kinds of things make something in your spirit click? Draw you in? Make you want to know and give more? And how have they become rungs on the ladder directing you to the things you were meant to do?
