Would Your Social Media Followers Take a Bullet For You? Evidence Here.

are facebook friends real, take a bullet

This funny image is from Ted McCagg.

So what about it? Are social media friendships real? Do you have social media followers or fans that have turned into meaningful relationships? How so?

Do tell.

People who claim social media friendships are real are setting themselves up for failure. Dude. It could be a burly ex-con down the road pretending to be a friend. Smarten up a little.

Not every social media profile is run by some slimy criminal. I think if you use common sense Twitter can be a good place to start a friendship. Not sure how far it goes if it remains entirely online.

Thanks for the comments @alana and @tracey. Here’s the thing: Even though I’ll give you that the internet creates a larger risk of someone misleading us, any NEW person you meet anywhere is a potential risk. Any one can misrepresent themselves.

Could you argue the internet is in many ways safer because, for example, you can often identify mutual friends between you and a new person…thus being able to more easily establish who they are even more easily than, say, the girl in your cycling class?

I agree Sarah. One of my blog followers found me through the Facebook ticker. She lives in England, saw a mutual friend share my post and then she started reading my blog. Through that initial exchange we now send emails back and forth frequently and pray for each other. I’m planning to meet her in England while on a trip with my husband in a few weeks. That is just one example. I have tons more.

Thanks @shelly. I’m the same way. I’ve met dozens of people online, but then later connected with them at conferences or events we were both attending (or have been invited to speak at their organizations and events). A couple of them have become such good friends that when people ask how we met, we look at each other questioningly like, “Was it really online? I think it was online.” But it’s brought us a lot of good.
