Blue Like Jazz Movie At The Box Office
Support Donald Miller’s Blue Like Jazz Movie at the Box Office
Movies with some tie to the Christian faith–The Passion, Fireproof, even Blindside–have taken the box office by storm in recent years.
Now, Donald Miller’s semi-autobiographical movie, Blue Like Jazz, is attempting to do the same thing as it opens this weekend.
While writers like myself may be tempted to view Don as a highly successful writer among those who touch on the subject of faith (and thus we imagine Don has no want for anything), I think in this case we’d be wrong.
One of the things that separates a cultural influencer from just an author is how they respond to success.
Do they lap up tropical drinks in their beach-side mansion? Do they get sucked into the whirlwind of fame and give up the very personality qualities that once endeared their readers?
While spending some time with Don over a meal during his Blue Like Jazz movie tour, it became clear to me he has done neither.
In fact, he has made a significant financial investment–a great personal risk–to bring audiences this film. He even sold his house during production to make funds available to offer this authentic telling of a young person’s real and sometimes irreverent journey away from faith and back to it.
And now this sort of effort needs your support.
Don and director Steve Taylor have created a movie that has merit as a film, outside of any objective the faith arena might project onto it. But it does tell an exploratory story about life and meaning and God that won’t come off as cheesy evangelism out of touch with the real world. This effort could pave the way for many other powerful stories of how God and messy life intersect on the big screen.
The best way you can support Don’s effort is by buying a ticket during opening weekend. The Blue Like Jazz movie is debuting at select theaters around the nation, which you can see here.
