Film Festival Brain Dump

The late Helen Hill and her husband, Paul (and their pig, Rosie)

  • The Ann Arbor Film Festival started Tuesday. And yes, I was the swooning school girl running Will Call.
  • The registration process has evolved since my initial love-at-first-sight run in with the festival back in the late 90’s.
  • These days, the whole deal is internet-powered. People can snatch up tickets via the film festival’s website, Brown Paper Tickets, and our new arrival (trumpet sound) Groupon in addition to the Michigan Theater box office.
  • (Some also get admission perks via their memberships, also purchase-able online.)
  • Did I mention there is a YELP discount too? You are drowning in options, people!
  • All the gateways ironically make it easier and harder (yes, at the same time) to keep the most updated lists of attenders in front of us. Ahhhh, technology. Our dearest friend? foe? partner.
  • Did you catch that I said Groupon? Yes. It’s true. Groupon launched in Ann Arbor last week and the Film Fest got to be one of the first events they offered discounts for. Welcome to the neighborhood.
  • I’ll add some highlights later in the week, but one of the kick-off screenings Tuesday night captured the compelling story of Helen Hill, an experimental animator who was inspired to make a film about a dressmaker after finding 100 dresses in a dumpster after Mardis Gras. The film and dresses were damaged in Hurricane Katrina and then–to heap more tradgedy into the mix–Helen tragically died during a 2007 home invasion. In a beautiful turn of events, however, her husband Paul not only completed the movie, but came out to Ann Arbor to introduce it to us.
  • I missed the Student Showcase yesterday to be at a meeting with my publisher (more later), but heard it was great!
  • The after party tonight is at the Aut at 10:30. You can check out the parties to come here.
  • Kids? Bring them to Safe as Milk, the family friendly screenings on Saturday. More info here.
  • Night owl? Try the Midnight movies Friday and Saturday.
  • There’s also some panels on documentary-making today at 3:15 and tomorrow at 3:00 and 5:00. And don’t forget the award programs are Sunday at 6:00 and 8:00.
  • Feel like stalking some other film fest related stuff? There’s an interview with Director Don here. Or go right to the master list of this year’s films (you get, of course, that I can’t personally endorse them all).
  • I’ll be there this afternoon, so stop by and say hi. Just look for the skinny brunette with the dazed, I-love-this-stuff expression on her face.

    Manifestation February 14, 2014 (3:26 pm)

To attract something into your experience, such as a multitude of sales, you have to go from ‘wanting’ it, to
feeling that you already have it. Whether you have heard about it or not depends on ‘who
you hang out with and what you read’ so as to speak.

Where you are today is the foundation for where
you are going so you should honor your today moments in
    all its darkness and beauty.

The Miracle Cure oxygen therapy May 27, 2014 (12:15 am)

My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just
blew up and spilled all over the bed, like
psshhheew. People Saved from the Brink of Death by the One-Minute Cure This
is an excerpt from a real-life case study. I had just read about putting a few drops of Wesson corn oil
on a piece of cotton and cleaning out the ears that way.
