The Rush of New
The last two days, I’ve been holed up in a conference room in Chicago, playing the part of the world’s quietest workshop attender.
It’s not that I’m the silent type.
(As if you wondered.)
It’s that this is my first fledgling step into a new industry I know nothing about.
Everything–every technical term, every expert’s name, every theory–I am hearing is brand new.
I am writing furious notes, burning through stacks of notebook pages.
My.pen.is.literally.conducting.heat.
And mostly, what I’ve learned so far, is how much more there is to learn.
Books to read.
DVDs to watch.
Experts to google up on.
More classes to take.
But this is the tip of excitement, not discouragement.
What better rush is there than to jump off the narrow ledge of what you do know into the abyss of what is left to learn?
What person is more exciting to meet than a reflection of yourself you had yet to know existed?

What kind of conference are you at? Learning a new skill/trade?

Ha. Sort of. It was a film conference. Hoping to pick up some skills that will be helpful for STORY, a group I work with that puts on events for Christian creatives. :)
